Nerina Canzi

"La nave / The Ship"

EH: ¿Desde cuándo y por qué has empleado herramientas digitales?

"Elefantes elegantes / Elegant Elephants"

"La sirena de metal / The Metal Mermaid"

"Bichos y otros seres / Bugs and other beings"

"El sembrador de estrellas / The Sower of Stars"

"Otoño en Kamundus / Autumn in Kamundus"

From the sky began to fall red, orange and yellow leaves. Autumn had arrived.
The people of Kamundus fell into a deep sleep.
(Text and Illustration by Nerina)

"Luna al Roquefort / Moon with Roquefort"

"Two noses sniffed and suddenly fell in love. He was called Nariguetto, she was called Narigundia.
It was a night scented jasmine and mandarin. In the sky shone a moon with a cheese smell ..."
(Text and Illustration by Nerina)

"Ángel urbano / Urban Angel"

"I remember an angel lived in my city's sky. If we stood silent, we listened the sweet music of his big wings."

Nerina Canzi was born in 1958. She earned a degree in Fine Arts, specialized in drawing and painting at the National School of Fine Arts Prilidiano Pueyrredón. She also studied literature at the University of Buenos Aires.
For about 17 years she lived and worked in Europe (3 in Udine and Conegliano, Italy, and 14 in Barcelona, Spain), during which she devoted herself, in collaboration with the architect and painter Jorge Bellini, to the realization of decorative painting and murals "trompe l'oeil". These jobs are usually done on walls or wood, pretending to deceive the eye of the viewer using perspective.
In 2006 Nerina returned to Argentina, and most recently has focused her work in illustration and graphic design as well as writing stories for children herself illustrates.

EH: Since when and why did you use digital tools?
NC: I chose digital technology because it gives me a better chance of doing and undoing, as I don't have a finished image in mind. First I have the glimpse of an image, make a simple drawing in pencil and then step to the computer to work it with Adobe Photoshop. The advantage I find is that I constantly transforming the first draft, I try different colors, textures and so on. Anyway I work with the digital pen in a very classic style, like a brush. As I enjoy the collage, working digitally brings more possibilities.

[3]
EH: Do you feel more comfortable working alone or in collaboration?
NC: I paint the murals together with my husband Jorge Bellini, who as an architect and painter works fine with the perspective, (essential for trompe l'oeil). I work alone for illustration and digital painting as they are more personal.

[4]
EH: Why children's books?
NC: Because I think there are more job opportunities. In the category for Illustrated Album, text and image are equally important. On the other hand also started writing children's stories because we have a young daughter. I invent stories for her and then write it.

[5]
EH: Do you have a reference, an artist whose work interests you most?
NC: Brueghel for his characters, his atmospheres and the perfect harmony between cool and warm colors. Also Pre-Renaissance artists because their naive painting.

[6]
EH: After 14 years in Barcelona, and after 7 years back in Argentina, what can you tell me about the art scene in your country in comparation with Spain?
NC: In Spain, Catalonia in particular where we were, there are many cultural scene but maybe in Argentina has more creativity. Many Argentine artists working for Spanish publishers. Anyway in Argentina in recent years have become very creative works in the audiovisual field.

[7]
"In the beginning I was to make an indifferent princess watching from a little window in the top of a very high tower. A toad desperately in love with her would be climbing to a cloud and about to fall with a bouquet of flowers in hand. The princess would look away with indifference as if the frog did not exist. The idea was to make a children's illustration.
I started drawing the princess and when I started painting I decided that I would not paint a princess and there would not be a frog. Yes I wanted to reflect on the character an attitude of indifference. She was not a princess anymore, was a woman looking to her side, from the window of her house, with a mixture of boredom and indifference. Then I painted the room as an empty box and then I thinked to add the male character ( husband, boyfriend, lover ? ) Like a clown, desperate to get her attention with a red flower that drips a blood petal. So I thought first in an image of traditional tales ( a princess and a frog ) and then during development the image was changing to end up being a scene with characters with a surreal touch."

[8]
"Later I began to realize the unconscious aspects of the work: Filomena has an air in the face of a friend who lives in Amsterdam and which for those days was in Buenos Aires. Also the choice of subject (indifference) was no accident when I did it was at a stage of much creative and certainly very 'indifferent' to my surroundings.
The name Filomena takes me back to childhood because it was the name of a spinster seamstress neighbor of my cousin who was always stuck inside your room.
But all these interpretations are post-creation time and even now when I'm writing about this job, appear and surprise me. When I'm painting I don't think about, I'm driven by the intention while I trying out colors, expressions. Everything changes and the overall result has nothing to do with the primary image that popped into my mind."
