On May 19 is the birthday of

Bert Hardy, documentary and press photographer born in 1913, known for his work published in the Picture Post magazine between 1941 and 1957.
He left school at age 14 to work for a chemist who also processed photos. His first big sale came when he photographed King George V and Queen Mary in a passing carriage, and sold 200 small prints of his best view of the King. Hardy freelanced for The Bicycle magazine, and bought his first small-format Leica 35 mm. He signed on with the General Photographic Agency as a photographer, then found his own freelance firm Criterion.
In 1941, Hardy was recruited by the editor Tom Hopkinson of the Picture Post. Hardy was self-taught and used a Leica —unconventional gear for press photographers of the era— but went on to become the Post's Chief Photographer, after he earned its first photographer credit for his 1 February 1941 photo-essay about Blitz-stressed fire-fighters.
Hardy served as a war photographer in the Army Film and Photographic Unit (AFPU) from 1942 until 1946: he took part in the D-Day landings in June 1944; covered the liberation of Paris; the allied advance across the Rhine; and was one of the first photographers to enter the liberated Belsen to record the suffering there. He also saved some Russian slaves from a fire set by German police in the city of Osnabrück, before photographing the aftermath.
He died in 1995.

On May 20 is the birthday of

Astrid Kirchherr, German photographer and artist born in 1938, well known for her association with the Beatles (along with her friends Klaus Voormann and Jürgen Vollmer), and her photographs of the Beatles during their Hamburg days: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best.
Kirchherr met artist Sutcliffe in the Kaiserkeller bar in Hamburg in 1960, where he was playing bass with the Beatles, and was later engaged to him, before his death in 1962. Although Kirchherr has taken very few photographs since 1967, her early work has been exhibited in Hamburg, Bremen, London, Liverpool, New York City, Washington, D.C., Tokyo, Vienna and at the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. She has published three limited-edition books of photographs.

Harold Mortimer-Lamb, Canadian photographer, painter, art critic, and mining engineer born in 1872, in the English town of Leatherhead, Surrey. Mortimer-Lamb began photographing around 1898, and by five years later was exhibiting with other pictorialists. He showed his work in the first and second salons of the Toronto Camera Club, in 1903 and 1904, and a 1905 show sponsored by the Canadian Society of Applied Art. In 1907, he and Sidney Carter each had over thirty of their pictures in Montreal’s Exhibition of Pictorial Photographs Arranged by the Photo-Club of Canada, far more than anyone else.
The Royal Photographic Society elected him to membership in 1910, and over the next few years he won plaques for his entries to competitions sponsored by the English magazine Amateur Photographer and Photographic News. He died in 1970.

On May 22 is the birthday of

After returning from Africa he was sent to Spain to film the 1936 People's Olympiad (a protest against the official Olympic games in Berlin under Hitler's propaganda). Soon after he arrived in Spain, the civil war broke out and Dezo found himself on the barricades. In this period he met personalities such as Hemingway and Robert Capa. Allegedly the three men formed an inseparable trio. Facing war dangers Dezo was injured a few times.
