El 11 de Mayo es el cumple de

Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, escultor y pintor francés nacido en 1827. 
Sus primeros estudios fueron con François Rude. Carpeaux entró en la École des Beaux-Arts en 1844 y ganó el Premio de Roma en 1854. Se trasladó a Roma en busca de inspiración. Allí estudió las obras de Michelangelo, Donatello y Verrocchio. Se quedó en Roma entre 1854 y 1861, donde le cogió el gusto al movimiento y la espontaneidad, lo que le unió a los grandes principios del arte barroco. Carpeaux trató temas de la vida real de las calles y rompió con la tradición clásica. 
Mientras fue estudiante en Roma, Carpeaux presentó una versión en yeso de "Pêcheur napolitain a la coquille", a la Academia Francesa. Esculpió la versión en mármol varios años más tarde, presentándola en el Salón de 1863. Fue adquirido por la emperatriz de Napoleón III, Eugenia. Jean-Léon Gérôme, pintor y escultor francés de estilo academicista, nacido en 1824. El rango de su obra abarca desde pintura histórica, mitología griega, orientalismo, retratos y otros temas, llevando hasta su clímax a la tradición de la pintura académica. Está considerado como uno de los pintores más importantes de este período en su estilo, y además de ser pintor también fue profesor de una larga lista de estudiantes.
Estudió con Paul Delaroche, a quien acompañó a Italia (1843-44). Visitó Florencia, Roma, el Vaticano y Pompeya, pero lo atrajo más el mundo de la naturaleza. Enfermó y se vio obligado a regresar a París en 1844. A su regreso continuó, como muchos otros estudiantes de Delaroche, en el estudio de Charles Gleyre. Murió en 1904.

El 12 de Mayo es el cumple de

Josep Lluís Pellicer i Fenyé, dibujante y pintor nacido en Barcelona en 1842. Compaginó su obra como pintor, con su producción gráfica destinada concretamente a la publicación en prensa realizando caricaturas, aunque su trabajo más destacado fue de cronista gráfico en la Tercera Guerra Carlista (1872-1876) y de corresponsal durante la Guerra Ruso-Turca (1877-1878). Sus dibujos bélicos, de un realismo y precisión sorprendentes, eran a menudo realizados en el campo de batalla, a veces incluso en primera línea. Con un trazo fino, detallista y de un realismo vivo, es considerado uno de los principales ilustradores de su época. Murió en 1901.

Joachim von Sandrart, historiador del arte y pintor alemán nacido en 1606, activo en Ámsterdam durante la Edad de Oro.
Hacia el año 1615, teniendo nueve o diez años, Sandrart comenzó a formarse como pintor y grabador con Peter Issenburg en Núremberg, con Stosskopf en Estrasburgo y luego con Aegidius Sadeler II en Praga. Después viajó a Utrecht, donde se hizo alumno (1625) de Gerrit van Honthorst, con quien permaneció hasta el año 1629. Conoció a Rubens, y cuando Van Honthorst fue invitado a Inglaterra en 1627, Von Sandrart le acompañó.
Luego Sandrart marchó a Italia. Se hizo allí famoso como retratista.

El 13 de Mayo es el cumple de

Georges Braque, pintor y escultor francés nacido en 1882, que fuera junto con Picasso y Juan Gris uno de los tres creadores básicos del cubismo. Creció y estudió en Le Havre, en la Escuela de Bellas Artes (Ecole des Beaux-Arts) desde 1897 hasta 1899. Llegó a París en 1900 donde estudió en la Academia Humbert y a partir de 1903, en la Escuela de Bellas Artes. La exposición fauvista de 1905 le impresionó tanto que se adscribió a este estilo. Durante 1907, la retrospectiva de Cézanne y su amistad con Picasso le hicieron cambiar de estilo. El trabajo de ambos, en estrecha relación, hará surgir y evolucionar al cubismo. Murió el 31 de agosto de 1963 en París.

Conrado Domínguez, artista mexicano nacido en 1950 en San Luís Potosí. Definido por Carlos Fuentes como el “pintor de la luz y el sol”, cuenta con más de cuarenta años de trayectoria profesional. Su formación, iniciada en 1965 en la Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas se amplió en 1975 al recibir una beca del Gobierno Francés para estudiar en la École Supérieur des Arts Décoratifs - Atelier Rohner; posteriormente se integra al Atelier 17 de grabado con Willian Stanley Hayter en París. De regreso a México en 1979 se ha dedicado a estudiar técnicas y materiales, investigación que le ha permitido crear un estilo propio y característico.

El 14 de Mayo es el cumple de

Antonio Berni, pintor argentino nacido en Rosario en 1905. Hijo de inmigrantes italianos, Berni fue un artista representativo de su época, caracterizado por el fuerte contenido social de su obra, con una galería de personajes entre los que se destacan Juanito Laguna y Ramona Montiel, representantes de los sectores más bajos y olvidados. Su obra estuvo influenciada por los acontecimientos históricos que vivió a lo largo de su vida.
En 1925 consiguió una beca y viajó a Europa donde expuso en el Salón de Madrid y estudió en París con André Lhote y Othon Friesz, en la Academia libre de la calle Grande Chaumiere. Regresó a Argentina y por los años '30 comenzó la etapa del "realismo social" fuertemente implicado con la situación social de su país. Murió en 1981.

George Grie, artista ruso-canadiense nacido en 1962.
Uno de los primeros artistas digitales surrealistas, Grie es conocido por sus numerosas imágenes 3D, 2D y matte. Nacido en la antigua Unión Soviética, no adoptó el convencional y políticamente correcto estilo artístico socialista.
Las obras de Grie están llenas de imágenes potentes que se basan en el impacto visual. El uso de técnicas fotorrealistas ofrece un fuerte contraste entre la fuente de luz y las tonalidades oscuras, que se aprecia en sus pinturas tempranas, dando a sus trabajos una apariencia gráfica. 
La admiración del artista por la fotografía es la razón por la cual Grie cambió sus preferencias por las bellas artes tradicionales, hacia el arte digital por ordenador.

El 15 de Mayo es el cumple de

Víktor Mijáilovich Vasnetsov (Ви́ктор Миха́йлович Васнецо́в), pintor ruso nacido en 1848 que se especializó en temas mitológicos e históricos. Perfeccionó su arte en San Petersburgo y se dedicó a ilustrar cuentos rusos y bylinas (poemas épicos). 
También fue arquitecto, siendo una de sus edificios más importantes la fachada de la Galería Tretyakov, cercana al Kremlin, la cual tiene la apariencia de un «térem», la casa descrita en los cuentos de hadas rusos.
En 1912 Vasnetsov recibió del emperador Nicolás II un título nobiliario. 
Está considerado co-fundador de la pintura rusa modernista folclorista y romántica, y una figura clave en el movimiento revivalista. Murió en 1926.

Knud Larsen Bergslien, pintor, profesor de arte y Maestro artista noruego nacido en 1827. En su arte frecuentemente retrató la vida de la gente noruega, sus historias y héroes del pasado.
Se alistó en el ejército cuando tenía 18 años, pero sus inusuales dotes para el dibujo pronto fueron noticia. Tras haber sido estudiante en la escuela de dibujo de Hans Reusch en Bergen, continuó sus estudios en el extranjero. Bergslien estudió en Amberes desde 1844-52, en París desde 1850-51 y en Düsseldorf desde 1855-69. El 16 de Mayo es el cumple de

Tamara de Lempicka (Tamara Łempicka, Maria Gurwik-Górska) pintora polaca nacida en 1898, reconocida por la belleza de sus retratos femeninos y desnudos estilo art decó.
En 1910 pinta su primer trabajo, el retrato de su hermana. En 1911 viaja a Italia, donde descubre su pasión por el arte. Tras una vida lujosa con su marido hasta la Revolución Rusa, emigró a París en 1923, donde nació su hija, Kizette. Tomó clases de pintura con André Lhote. Más tarde expuso en varias galerías de París, ya en estilo art decó.
En los años '30 vivió en Estados Unidos donde se hizo muy famosa entre la burguesía neoyorquina, exponiendo en varias galerías estadounidenses y europeas. También trabaja con Willem de Kooning y Georgia O'Keeffe. En 1960, Tamara cambia de estilo, pasándose al abstraccionismo. Murió en 1980.

Laura Wheeler Waring, artista y educadora afroamericana nacida en 1887, conocida por sus pinturas de prominentes figuras afroamericanas producidas durante el Renacimiento de Harlem.
Su madre era la hija de Amos Noë Freeman, un pastor presbiteriano, y Christiana Williams Freeman, quien había tenido una destacada actividad antiesclavista. Laura se graduó en la Escuela Pública Superior Hartford en 1906 y estudió en la Academia de Bellas Artes de Pensilvania, graduándose en 1914.
Comenzó a atraer la atención sobre sus pinturas durante un viaje a Europa en 1924, que realizó con la novelista Jessie Redmon Fauset. Alfred Joseph Casson, pintor canadiense nacido en 1898, miembro del grupo conocido como "Grupo de los Siete". Destacó por sus pinturas de paisajes, bosques y granjas del sur de Ontario, y por ser el miembro más joven del mencionado grupo. Murió en 1992.

Sergey Tyukanov, artista ruso nacido en la isla de Sakhalin en 1955, en el pequeño pueblo de Poronaisk, situado en la costa del Océano Pacífico.

On May 15 is the birthday of

Sergey Tyukanov, Russian artist born on the island Sakhalin in 1955, in a small town Poronaisk, situated on the coast of the Pacific Ocean. 
He spend his childhood far away from the so-called "civilization" and the only window to the reality that he had were childrens' illustrated books. They became his fairy tale world which, although he have grown up, he don't want to depart with even today. Art has become his philosophy, his religion, and that fairy tale world where all his fantasies and wishes come true. The world of brushes, pencils, watercolors, and miscellaneous bottles with inks and paints, which he endlessly love, have become for him a theatre, where he organize everything in his specific order and create a spectacle to amuse himself. In this theatre he's the director, the actor and the viewer at the same time.
