Mauro Cano [Pintura, Dibujo]

Let's continue with this view at some interesting Argentine figurative artists, now with Mauro Cano, a young creator from Mendoza whose work, with an almost photographic realism is often distorted by the fusion of the characters with the environment, usually walls. The skin becomes stone ... or vice versa forming a continuum in which those characters and significant places, so well known by Mauro, become one.

"Instante de placer / Instant of Pleasure", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 150 x 170 cm., 2009

About "Instant of Pleasure"
«In this case, what I'm looking for is the person's link to his environment, and I think the walls say a lot. The energy, the situation, the needs of an artist remain. That's why I'm looking for scenarios that have to do with me. For example this one. It is a place, let's say abandoned, that was a house, near the workshop where I grew up and played as a child with my friends, and in a moment was demolished. People disappeared from one day to the next, and I felt the need to capture that, to stay in me somehow, that it was impossible that from one day to the next the walls where we played, where we were dashing, where we also fell in love, disappear as if nothing had happened.»

"Placeres III / Pleasures III", óleo sobre madera / oil on wood, 34 x 46 cm., 2013

"Tu juego / Your Game", óleo sobre madera / oil on wood, 35 x 50 cm., 2016

"Cristalino / Crystalline", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 60 x 70 cm., 2008

"Escapar / Escape", lápiz sobre papel / pencil on paper, 60 x 40 cm., 2011

"Dédalo / Tangle", acuarela y lápiz color sobre papel / watercolor and color pencil on paper, 26 x 36 cm, 2014.

"Cinésica / Kinetic" (díptico / diptych), óleo sobre madera / oil on wood, c/u / each 40 x 40 cm., 2010

"Destino / Destiny", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 103 x 120 cm., 2008

"Escondite / Hideaway", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 95 x 95 cm., 2007

Mauro Cano is an Argentine painter born in Mendoza in 1978.
According to him, «I grew up in a young neighborhood, with small streets and gray trees, between wild cane fields and bicycle evenings. From the beginning, as a child, I was immersed in the fantasy and innocence of the primary drawing. A carefree and natural stroke comforted me, carried me in the infinite search for a new space of freedom. The ink made blood on me, infuriated the limits of the imagination and stumbled over and over again with the fragility of thought. Now, turned into "immortality" , I defoliate each color impregnated and reflected in its skin, as if a long way never ends. The skin I seek is not that of the "man" ... is the one of the "soul".»

"Polen / Pollen", óleo sobre tela / oil on canvas, 190 x 140 cm. 2016
Colección C.A. / C.A. Collection, Buenos Aires, Argentina

«... my work has always been on a realistic path. But I have also left corners for experimentation and other searches that are alternatives to me.»

"Marcia", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 150 x 240 cm., 2008

Me abrió muchos amigos allá.

About "Marcia"
«It's one of the most special works I have. (...) It is a work that traveled to Spain, had a good repercussion there in a Hall. Then it was published in a Yearbook. He opened many friends there. And I think it made me realize the importance of the artist being universal. One can not think of a work to be in his house or his friends, or his province. An artist has to think about doing it for the world. You can paint your town, but your town have to travel. I think that work opened for me the universal panorama that I had not seen until that moment.
It was a work where I challenged myself in technical, compositional levels. I became even sentimentally involved with situations that perhaps I had not dared to confront before. It was like gave everything I've got, something like a recognition for all that effort.»

"Placeres IV (pistacho, frutilla, limón y chocolate) / Pleasures IV (pistachio, strawberry, lemon and chocolate)"
Óleo sobre tela / oil on canvas. 95 x 100 cm., 2013

«I think everyone can have the urge or need not only to paint, but to grab a guitar, a hammer, or whatever, and that vital motivation to generate a" creative act "arises. It seems to me that everything that is innate and spontaneous is always positive. That speaks of the passion and the sincere passion that exists in every person who wants to express himself. The word "artist" is so large and complex, starting from the conviction that art in the first place, is infinite. Probably never, no one in the world is a complete artist. I prefer to consider myself a sketcher and a painter, rather than an artist.»

"Eternidad / Eternity", óleo sobre tela / oil on canvas, 180 x 125 cm., 2016

"Superstición blanca / White Superstition"
Acuarela y lápiz color sobre papel / watercolor and color pencil on paper, 24 x 32 cm., 2014

«I think the artist should not worry about the "fashions", the trends or the needs of the time. The work must be in process as long as it needs, the time needed to flow. If that time is much more than that of other artists, I'm not interested, I do not worry and it does not limit me either. What also happens to me is that I do not get involved with the needs of galleries, museums or cultural spaces. My only concern is my work and its creative process, the pictorial. The rest will come in any way. It even happens that every time I paint less, every time I paint slower. Years ago I painted ten pictures a year, now I make five. Every painting takes me about three months of work. I am not interested in showing quantity and if I have three works to show, then there are three.»

"Últimos días de verano / Last Days of Summer", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 93 x 89 cm., 2010

Mauro's pictorial development has been basically self-taught: "... I locked myself in my workshop, I talked to myself, I spent years thinking, watching, studying ... It was a solitary search.", and although he deeply admires Velázquez's work, and other figurative ones like Antonio López García, Jaime Valero, Lucian Freud or Gottfried Helnwein, confesses that he'is enriched by its contemplation, but observes them "with a certain distance".
The University gave me the discipline to work, but I got to a point, more precisely in the third year, where they don't understand painting with oil, more "traditional", as a contemporary work.

Music occupies an important place in his creative life; In fact, he is the guitarist in the rock band "Frasco".
"I always listen to music, in a moment of my youth I thought that I would be a musician. I like hard rock, but I listen to everything. "
