"Mönch und Nixen / Monje y sirenas / Monk and Mermaids", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 120 x 120 cm., 1921

"Der Mäzen / El mecenas / The Patron", óleo sobre panel / oil on panel, 183 x 244 cm., 1964. Lempertz

"La Terrasse / La terraza / The Terrace", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 145 x 179,5 cm. Lempertz

"Enthauptung des Johannes / Decapitación de Juan / Decapitation of John"
Óleo sobre panel / oil on panel, 90 x 120 cm., 1947. Artnet

"Frauenportrait / Retrato de mujer / Portrait of a Woman"
Óleo sobre panel / oil on panel, 60 x 50 cm., 1935. Lempertz

"De Dam te Amsterdam / La plaza Dam de Ámsterdam / The Dam in Amsterdam"
Lápiz y pincel sobre papel / pencil and brush on paper, 40 × 51 cm., 1895-98.
Rijksmuseum (Ámsterdam, Holanda / The Netherlands)

"Liggend Naakt / Desnudo reclinado / Reclining Nude"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 95 x 145 cm., c.1888.
Stedelijk Museum (Ámsterdam, Holanda / The Netherlands). Wikimedia Commons

"De rode kimono / El kimono roko / The Red Kimono"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 51.5 x 76 cm., 1893
Stedelijk Museum (Ámsterdam, Holanda / The Netherlands)

Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 81 x 70,5 cm., c.1904. Wikimedia Commons

El 13 de Septiembre es el cumple de

Anna Massey Lea Merritt, pintora estadounidense nacida en 1844 en Filadelfia, Pensilvania.

"Amor bloqueado / Love Locked Out", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 115,6 x 64,1 cm., 1889
Tate Gallery (Londres, Reino Unido / London, UK)

Anna no tuvo hijos y no volvió a casarse.

"Eva / Eve", óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 76,8 x 109,2 cm., 1885. Invaluable

"La sra. Jane de Saumarez, de nacimiento Anne Broke (f.1933), esposa de James, 4º Barón de Saumarez /
Lady Jane de Saumarez, née Jane Anne Broke (d.1933), Wife of James, 4th Baron de Saumarez"
Óleo sobre lienzo / oil on canvas, 126 x 100 cm., 1930 o antes / or beforeArtUK
St John's Residential Home (Guernsey, Reino Unido / UK)

"Guerra / War", 101.5 x 139.5 cm., 1883. ArtUK
Bury Art Museum (Reino Unido / UK)

On September 10 is the birthday of

Rudolf Jettmar, Austrian painter and graphic artist born in 1869 in Zawodzie near Tarnów, Galicia.
Jettmar studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and worked as a professor at this institution from 1910 until his retirement in 1936. In 1929 he succeeded Ferdinand Schmutzer as master of the masterclass for graphics. Jettmar also taught from 1898 at the Frauenkunstschule, the later Viennese women's academy.
From 1898 he was a member of the Vienna Secession. Jettmar's work is influenced by the Max Klinger's. He is regarded as a significant representative of symbolism. "The Hours of the Night", "Prometheus" (1910 and 1916) and the eight etchings of the cycle "Cain after Lord Byron" are among his most important graphic works. Jettmar's paintings include the side altars of the church at Steinhof. Jettmar's painterly masterpiece "Way of life", from 1909, was destroyed in the war.
Jettmar died of a stroke in 1939. On the occasion of his fiftieth anniversary, the Austrian Post dedicated him a special stamp. In 1954 the Jettmargasse was named after him in Vienna-Liesing (23rd district).
The few remaining oil paintings (landscapes, Greek mythology) as well as etchings are predominantly family-owned.

On September 11 is the birthday of

Gert Heinrich Wollheim, German painter born in 1894 in Dresden-Loschwitz, associated with the New Objectivity, and later an expressionist who worked in United States after 1947.
He studied at the College of Fine Arts in Weimar from 1911 to 1913, where his instructors included Albin Egger-Lienz and Gottlieb Forster. From 1914–1917 he was in military service in World War I, where he was wounded. After the war he lived in Berlin until 1919, when Wollheim, Otto Pankok (whom he had met at the academy in Weimar), Ulfert Lüken, Hermann Hundt and others created an artists' colony in Remels, (East Frisia).
At the end of 1919 Wollheim and Pankok went to Düsseldorf and became founding members of the "Young Rhineland" group, which also included Max Ernst, Otto Dix, and Ulrich Leman. Wollheim was one of the artists associated with the art dealer Johanna Ey, and in 1922 he was taken to court over a painting displayed at her gallery. In 1925 he moved to Berlin, and his work, which always emphasized the theatrical and the grotesque, began a new phase of coolly objective representation.
Immediately after Hitler's seizure of power in 1933 his works were declared degenerate art and many were destroyed. He fled to France and became active in the Resistance. He was one of the co-founders of the artists' federation, the Union des Artistes Allemandes Libres, an organization of exiled German artists founded in Paris in autumn 1937. In that same year, he became the companion of the dancer Tatjana Barbakoff. Meanwhile, in Munich, three of his pictures were displayed in the defamatory Nazi exhibition Entartete Kunst (Degenerate Art) in 1937.
From Paris, he fled to Saarbrücken and later to Switzerland. He was arrested in 1939 and held in a series of labor camps in France (Vierzon, Ruchard, Gurs and Septfonds) until his escape in 1942, after which he and his wife hid in the Pyrénées with the help of a peasant woman. At war's end in 1945 he returned to France, and in 1947 moved to New York and became an American citizen. There he died in 1974.
In 2000 the August Macke Haus in Bonn presented an important retrospective exhibition of his work.

On September 12 is the birthday of

George Hendrik Breitner, Dutch painter and photographer born in 1857 in Rotterdam.
From October 1878 till April 1879 he worked as an art teacher at the Leiden academy Ars Aemula Naturae. In 1880 he was expelled from the Art Academy of The Hague for misconduct. In the same year he was accepted as a member of Pulchri Studio, an important artist's society in The Hague.
During 1880–1881 he worked at the famous Panorama Mesdag together with Hendrik Mesdag, S. Mesdag-van Houten, Theophile de Bock and Barend Blommers. In 1882 he met and worked together with Vincent van Gogh, with whom he often went sketching in the poorer areas of The Hague. Breitner preferred working-class models: labourers, servant girls and people from the lower class districts. Interest in the lot of the common people, which many artists felt in that period, was nurtured by the social conscience of French writers such as Émile Zola.
In 1886, he entered the Rijksakademie of Amsterdam, but soon it became clear that Breitner was far beyond the level of education offered there.
Breitner saw himself as "le peintre du peuple", the people's painter. He was the painter of city views par excellence: wooden foundation piles by the harbour, demolition work and construction sites in the old centre, horse trams on the Dam, or canals in the rain. With his nervous brush strokes, he captured the dynamic street life. By 1890, cameras were affordable, and Breitner had a much better instrument to satisfy his ambitions. He became very interested in capturing movement and illumination in the city, and became a master in doing this. It is not impossible that Breitner's preference for cloudy weather conditions and a greyish and brownish palette resulted from certain limitations of the photographic material.
Breitner also painted female nudes, but just like Rembrandt he was criticized because his nudes were painted too realistically and did not resemble the common ideal of beauty. In his own time Breitner's paintings were admired by artists and art lovers, but often despised by the Dutch art critics for their raw and realistic nature.
By the turn of the century Breitner was a famous painter in the Netherlands, as demonstrated by a highly successful retrospective exhibition at Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam (1901). Breitner travelled frequently in the last decades of his life, visiting Paris, London, and Berlin, among other cities, and continued to take photographs. In 1909 he went to the United States as a member of the jury for the Carnegie International Exhibition in Pittsburgh.
Although Breitner exhibited abroad early on, his fame never crossed the borders of the Netherlands.
He died in 1923.

On September 13 is the birthday of

Anna Massey Lea Merritt, American painter born in 1844 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
She studied anatomy at the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania. In 1865, the family moved to Europe, where she took art lessons from Stefano Ussi, Heinrich Hoffman, Léon Cogniet and Alphonse Legros. They moved to London in 1870 to escape the Franco-Prussian War, and in 1871 she met Henry Merritt (1822–1877), a noted art critic and picture conservator, who would become her tutor and later, her husband. They married 17 April 1877 but he died 10 July the same year. She had no children and did not marry again. Merritt spent the rest of her life in England, though with frequent trips to the USA, with exhibitions and awards in both countries, becoming a celebrated artist.
Merritt painted her best-known work, Love Locked Out, in memory of her husband. She had hoped to have the image done in bronze as a monument, but could not afford it. Merritt initially resisted allowing the painting to be copied despite innumerable requests, because she feared the subject would be misinterpreted. Though Merritt was already a recognized working artist, she had intended to end her professional career after her wedding, but she returned to painting after her husband's death. Ironically, though she was American, Love Locked Out was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1890 and became the first painting by a woman artist acquired for the British national collection.
She died in 1930.

On September 14 is the birthday of

Horia Bernea, Romanian painter born in 1938 in Bucharest, son of sociologist and ethnologist Ernest Bernea. Horia Bernea held the post of general manager of the Romanian Peasant Museum between 1990-2000.
Between 1957 and 1959 Horia Bernea attended the courses of the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Bucharest, between 1959 and 1965 Technical School of Architecture, and between 1962-1965 Pedagogical Institute (Drawing Section).
His public debut as a painter was in 1965, at the Youth Centers of the Artists Union.
He was a member of the group of Poiana Marului, a member of the "Prolog" group, he worked in the creation camps in Varatec and Tescani, then in Paris and in southern France in Provence.
He had numerous personal or group exhibitions at the Richard Demarco Gallery (1970-1971), the College Gallery at the University of Birmingham, Sigi Krauss Gallery in Covent Garden (1971), Compass Gallery in Glasgow (1971), Richard Demarco Gallery (1976) Generative Art Gallery, London (1976), etc.
Between 1998 and 1999, he presented in Rome, with the theologian, anthropologist and diplomat Teodor Baconsky (then Ambassador of Romania to the Holy See) an illustrated testimony of "Byzantine Rome": "Roma caput mundi. A subjective guide to the Eternal Citadel", supported by dialogues, notes, photographs, watercolors and drawings, the true "new staging" of the Roman miracle.
He was a member of the Historical Monuments Commission and the Reflection Group for Church Reform.
He died in Paris in 2000.

On September 15 is the birthday of

August Friedrich "Fritz" Overbeck, German painter and engraver born in 1869 in Bremen.
After graduating from the local Gymnasium, he attended the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1889 to 1893. Among his teachers there were Eugen Dücker and Peter Janssen. In 1894, he was persuaded by Otto Modersohn to set up a studio at the Artists' Colony in Worpswede, where he became fascinated with painting the desolate moorlands.
In 1897, he married one of his students, Hermine Rohte, who had sought him out as a teacher after seeing an exhibition of his works at the Munich Glaspalast. She would also achieve some fame as a painter. Their son, Fritz Theodor Overbeck, was a noted botanist.
Around 1900, he became one of the many artists who were selected in a series of contests to design trading cards for the chocolate-maker Ludwig Stollwerck. In 1905, after Hermine was diagnosed with tuberculosis, he and his family moved to Vegesack, where he specialized in painting the beaches and sand dunes. He later became a member of the Deutscher Künstlerbund.
In 1909 he died, suddenly, from a stroke. He was buried at the Waller Friedhof in Bremen. Hermine survived her illness and devoted much of her time to promoting his work.
In 1990, his granddaughter Gertrud established the "Fritz and Hermine Overbeck Foundation", to preserve and publicize his work. In 2010, she was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany for her efforts.

Today, September 16, is the birthday of

Raymond Chow (曹惠文), Canadian artist born in 1941 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He is primarily recognized for his paintings and drawings. Chow is also a pianist, an author and a composer of musical works.
Chow creates colourful and detailed paintings of cats, still life, cities, windows, doors, beaches, gardens, and nudes. During the later periods of his work, he began experimenting with abstracts. His work is influenced by his experience with his family and during his travels in England, Hollywood, and Pasadena California, Maui, Oahu Hawaii. He also produces tiles, metal prints, giclee prints on canvas.
Chow attended General Wolfe Elementary School and King Edward High. He later graduated from the University of British Columbia's Art Education program and studied piano at the Toronto Royal Conservatory of Music. He earned a teaching degree in art at UBC. After graduation, he taught at Vancouver Tech High School for a year, but then dedicated his time solely to his artistic work.
In the mid-1950s, while a teenager, Raymond began his art career drawing black ink drawings of Vancouver's wooden Victorian buildings. Later, he used a Chinese brush and painted with acrylics.
Raymond's work has been exhibited across Canada and in Seattle, San Francisco, and London, as well as at the Royal Palace of India in Rajasthan.
